Bojnice Zoological garden

The oldest Slovakian zoo was officially founded in early 1955, but was preceded by the zoo-corner in the castle moat (since 1951). Originally there were only roe deer, red deer and wild boars, but because of the great popularity other animals were added soon - Dybowski's deer, fallow deer, wild cats, wolves, fox, badger, horned owl, eagle, buzzard. After separation from the Regional Nitra Museum and the establishment of a separate organisation - regional zoo, the number of animals increases, in 1960 there were more than 150 species, today there is around 400 species, and according to many people the zoo is the best in the Slovakia.

Big and small predators (lions, leopards, jaguars, lynxes and other small cats, bears, wolves, badgers, coatis, meerkats, kharzas, genets...), primates (orangutans, gibbons, colobus, guenons, lemurs, marmosets, tamarins...), elephants, ungulates (antelopes, deer, takins, kiangs, Przewalski horses, zebras, llamas, camels, ibexes...), kangaroos, cassowaries, emus, rheas, seriemas, raptors, owls, parrots, toucans, hornbills, crowned pigeons, waterfowl, pelicans, flamingos, storks, ibises, cranes, pheasants, a large collection of reptiles, frogs, fish, butterflies, aquatic invertebrates...

The rarest animals include: Roloway guenon, mountain bongo and golden takin. Significant exposures: elephant house, primate house, bear exhibition, aquarium and terrarium etc.
