Efforts to found a classical zoo in Prague are dated already to late 19th century. - since 1881. It should be originally in the Royal park (formerly Obora Ovenec today Stromovka), where was already in times of Maximilian II and Rudolf II. Later it was suggested many other places (Nebozízek, Rajská zahrada, Strahov, Kanálka, Petřín, Kinsky Garden, Vrchlicky park, Štvanice island). In 1908 even the newspaper "Zoologická zahrada Praha" (Prague Zoological Garden) started to be published - with a map for future zoo in Štvanice. All efforts the WWI interrupted. Finally the decisive fact was that the landowner Alois Svoboda gave (usufructuary leased) to the state land just in Trója and part of that (24 ha) had be used for the creation of the zoo. (To this day, many experts claim that the Prague Zoo has the best land of all zoos in the world). 1927, part of the area was fenced and 1930 the building of the zoo was already underway. 28th September 1931 the zoo was inaugurated - even if it was rather construction site. The zoo was soon ranked among the significant European and world breeding facilities. In 50s, it served as a transit (transport) station between East (USSR) and West. In 2002 half of the zoo was destroyed by the floods, then nearly all the pavilions and exhibitions in the lower part of the zoo was renovated or built new. The zoo became famous primarily about breeding of Przewalski horses.
