Zoo of Society IRIS was predecessor of today's Pilsen Zoo. It was founded in 1926 on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the club, lay in Doudlevce beside the military and the town swimming pool. Initially it was just a few aviaries (parrots, raptors ...), enclosures (antelope, deer, camels...) and the cages of monkeys (macaques) and carnivores (jackals, foxes...). During the war, the zoo got lions and bears (including Sun bear). Furthermore, there were an aquariums and terrariums, leopards, cougars, lynx, wolves, hyenas, capuchins, wildebeests, fallow deer, moufflons, ponies, yaks, emus, waterfowl etc. In the 60s even saiga antelope was reared. In the 50s the zoo was assignated under the National Committee management (because of political pressures) and the IRIS society became defunct. Later the zoo was incorporated into the Park of Culture and Rest. Since the late the 50s people were thinking about moving of the zoo to Lochotín, where building of botanical garden began (and where lies the current zoo). In 1961 at the zoo in Doudlevce the anthrax broken out, most animals had to have been destroyed and the Zoo was abolished (1962). In the same year (1961) the botanical garden was opened and two years later (1963) also separate new zoo in Lochotín (the rest of animals from Zoo Iris was relocated here in already 1962). Due to the necessary termination of the Zoo Iris, the temporary exhibition (or rather the building site) of new zoo was opened earlier than it was planned and it remained as a building site and stopgap even for many years. In 1981 it was merged with the botanical garden.

Throughout its existence, does not protrude from the average of the then socialist Czechoslovak zoos, vice versa it used to be rather a "Cinderella" among them. However at the turn of the millennium, the zoo began to going through the verbatim complete rebirth... Gradually it transformed into a modern breeding facility at top world-class. Today it is one of the best zoos in the country. Old gruesome cages were replaced by new mixed zoogeographical excellent expositions without bars. Africa and Asia is ranked among the newest and most attractive parts (houses of rhinos and giraffes, hippo pavilion, opened enclosures of rhinos, cheetahs, warthogs, giraffes, colobus etc.), Madagascar pavilion, but also Palearctis (enclosure of muskox, bears, tigers, snow leopards...), very interesting is also Czech river (open-air aquariums with fish zones). Only two of older pavilions remained - the original pavilion of carnivores renovated to today's "Mysterious World of the African night" and the oldest (and worst) Pavilion "Z" - now Tropical Pavilion. Zoo Plzeň (including the Akva-Tera) keeps around 1300 species of animals, what ranks it among the absolute world top. It has the second largest collection of birds in Europe (nearly 500 species).
