Ornithological guild for Northern Bohemia (Verein für Ornithologischen Nordböhmen) founded Geflügelpark (Bird Park) in 1895, and in 1904 also an aviary, other bird, enclosure of roe deer and gave a swan to lake. By this basically a little mini-zoo was created, and it laid the foundation for future zoo. In 1907 Tyrolean style wooden house called "Čapí hnízdo" (Stork's nest, which is in the zoo to present days - the oldest building in the zoo) was transferred to the mini-zoo . Zoological Garden (at the time with a German name Tiergarten) was founded in 1919. Therefore it is the oldest existing zoo in the former Czechoslovakia - but not the oldest Czech zoo. Liberec zoo was founded as a German and for many years remained German, therefore Prague Zoo is the oldest Czech zoo. Untill 40s - 50s, the zoo was partly seasonal facility (most animals were sold before the winter and again bought in the spring). Many people even called for the abolition of the zoo after the war. It didn't happen, conversely the zoo began to specialize in endangered species, and over the years many pavilions and expositions have been built - pavilion of penguins, elephants, giraffes and rhinos, big cats, orangutans, monkeys, flamingos, tropical hall, pool of sea lions, complex of raptor aviaries (in its time the largest in Europe) etc.
Unequivocally most popular animals of today's zoo are the white tigers, which gave name to the local ice-hockey club, and are the marketing face of the zoo, but there are many other attractive and rare species... e.g.: sea lions, carnivores (tigers, lions, leopards, snow leopards, cheetahs, red pandas, meerkats, genet, mongoose, maned wolves...), primates (chimpanzees, orangutans, gibbons, baboons, mandrills, vervet monkeys, lion-tailed macaques, tamarins...), elephants, rhinos, giraffes, zebras, Somali wild asses, camels, llamas... Zoologically valuable (although unattractive for visitors) is a large collection of Bovidae. The rarest ever the animal in Liberec Zoo is Shensi takin (until recently, the first and only outside of China, now also in Tierpark Berlin, in Chomutov and in Bojnice - all from Liberec), but there are also muskoxen, tahrs, bharals, Dagestan tur (which is in about 6 zoos of the world), bleboks, bongos, roan antelopes etc. Bird empire are represented primarily by the number of raptors (more than 20 species, least often bred are yellow-headed caracara, greater spotted eagle, lesser spotted eagle, Bonelli's eagle, booted eagle etc.), anseriformes (about 15 species), parrots (including, for example kea), hornbills, penguins, pelicans, flamingos, herons, ibises, crowned-pigeons, weavers, mynahs etc. There is also some reptiles (snakes, monitor lizards, iguanas, agamas, turtles and dwarf crocodiles) and fish.
