One of the smallest state zoos in Czech Republic was founded in 1948 and opened to the public a year later - in the spring 1949. For years Decin Zoo was one of the worst in the country, but in the 90s has been completely refurbished. This reconstruction diametrically changed the face of the whole zoo. Today's zoo is a modern European facilities with attractive exhibits. Large animals (herbivores) can not be kept there due to the location (on a steep hill) and very difficult transportation services in the winter, yet there are very attractive species... Significant breeding of small cats (fishing cat, jaguarundi, margay,..), grizzly bear, sun bear, leopard, maned wolf, mongooses, monkeys (vervet monkeys, mangabeys, macaques, capuchins, squirrel monkeys, night monkeys, slow loris, Callitrichidae...), ungulates (anoa, takin, babirusa, musk-deer, sambar, mountain goat, ibex ...), hutias, capybaras, maras, North American porcupine, anteaters, armadillos, the number of birds (rheas, parrots, pheasants, storks, cranes, mynahs, seriamas, hornbills, raptors, owls, waterfowls...) and several reptiles and amphibians. Among the most popular exhibitions ranks large enclosure of grizzly bears, enclosure of babirusas, bird house, South American enclosure, but very interesting is also extensive exhibition of local species.
