Tiergarten Ferdinandshöhe (Wittrusch • Außig) • Zvířecí Park Ferdinandova výšina (Ústí nad Labem)

Facility that could be considered the first classical public zoo in the Czech lands. Today is mostly used name Zvířecí park Větruše (Větruše Animal Park). However at the beginning of the century was used mainly the German equivalent "Tiergarten Wittrusch", respectively. "Tiergarten Ferdinadshöhe"... Větruše (in German Wittrusch) was renamed in 1847 to Ferdinand's Height (Ferdinandshöhe) and this name was applied until 1945, when it returned the original name Větruše.

Menagerie was established by the city in cooperation with the Tourist nountain association and served especially as a transfer station for animals of trader Carl Simon. He usually bring animals to Hamburg and from there follow the river Elbe to Ústí, where they drew strength after a long journey in Větruše Animal Park.

There were number of cages, aviaries and terrariums and unusually diverse collection of animals (with a regard to the beginning of the 20th Century)... leopard, (may be also lion), prairie wolves, hyena, monkey house with baboons and several smaller species (macaques, vervet monkeys), antelopes, zebras, kulan, bears, bisons, moufflons, fallow and roe deer, ferrets, badgers, foxes, fruit-bats, swans, flamingos, storks, golden pheasants, magpies, jays, jackdaws, raptors, macaws, cockatoos, birds of paradise (!!!), penguins (!!!), seals (!!!), armadillo (!!!)... In the terrarium there was crocodiles or anacondas. in three aquariums were sharks, tropical fish and anemones... There was also department of insects and stuffed animals. Zoo finished due to difficult economic situation during the World War I. Today almost nobody knows it (including residents of Usti).
